Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD or ADD)

School services and accommodations for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) or attention deficit disorder (ADD) are available in Virginia under the education category of “Other Health Impairment.” The Virginia Department of Education has guidelines for special test accommodations which are frequently necessary for students with AD/HD.

Northern Virginia

CHADD of Northern Virginia (CHADD-NOVA) is a chapter of the national CHADD organization (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder http://www.chadd.org). CHADD-NOVA holds periodic meetings with presentations from professionals in the region and also keeps a calendar for support group meetings. For more information see http://www.meetup.com/novachadd.

Arlington

An AD/HD Yahoo Group for Arlington parents of children with ADD or AD/HD was founded by Arlington parent (now School Board member) Nancy Van Doren.  To join the list you can join online or send an email to arlingtonadhd-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

The ADHD Task Force, now disbanded, joined staff and parent groups working on improving outcomes for student with characteristics of ADHD in the Arlington Public Schools.  Information is available on the APS website here.

Fairfax

Located at Dunn Loring Center for Parent Services, 2334 Gallows Road, Room 105, Dunn Loring, Virginia 22027, the Fairfax County Public Schools Special Education Parent Resource Center (PRC) is an important resource for parents. The FCPS website lists programming coordinated by the PRC, which includes free workshops on AD/HD and other disabilities commonly affecting individuals with AD/HD. CHADD: Children & Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
The Alexandria CHADD Parent Support Group meets the 4th Monday of each month at 6:30 pm at Aldersgate Church, 1301 Collingwood Road, Alexandria, VA 22308.
